July 4th Picnic

  • Old Kona Airport Park (map)

WHY should you consider joining us for our annual July 4 picnic at the Old Airport Makaeo Pavilion in Kona from 12 noon until 2 PM?

With all that's happening locally, nationally and globally, we Hawai'i County Democrats need to stick together and focus on our values. On Thursday July 4, 2019 Democrats will gather to celebrate unity and collaborate to take on the challenges we face.  Most urgently this includes registering voters to participate in local and national elections and advocate for human rights, dignity and protection of Mother Earth at home and afar.

There is much work to do -- please join in!  The next generations -- if not the entire world -- are counting on us!

What to bring: It's a potluck, so please consider preparing/sharing something locally grown or produced. Bring a card describing your dish. The Hawaii county democratic party will provide beverages and hot dogs. We also urge everyone to bring their own reusable plates or bowls, utensils and cups!

What to expect:  In addition to music, door prizes and fun seeing friends from around the island, many of our elected officials will be there. We'll have a chance to get better acquainted and advocate for the issues and concerns most important to us.  New candidates seeking office and others actively supporting various Presidential hopefuls will share ideas and issues, promising a great time of learning and sharing.

Some history: This picnic started in 2001 when John Buckstead and his wife, Pat Stolfa retired from Washington DC to West Hawai'i and brought their extensive Democratic Party dedication and work ethic with them. John had worked for many years with the late Senator Dan Akaka and long-time local HCEOC head George Yokoyama. They and others got busy to change the perception of West Hawai'i as "all Republicans."  Connecting with the community's long time Democrats, especially those in Kona mauka, John and Pat hatched the idea of an annual picnic to rally folks together and prove that West Hawai'i was really a Democratic stronghold.  Over the years many joined in this effort and today we have much to show for it: all West Hawai'i seats are held by Democrats!

We need you - please join us!
